Brazilian or European Portuguese: decide before you upload

Manuce treats European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese as two separate languages. In a presentation the difference shows on the first slide, because audiences notice vocabulary that is not their own:

  • screen: ecrã in Portugal, tela in Brazil;
  • file: ficheiro / arquivo;
  • team: equipa / equipe;
  • user: utilizador / usuário;
  • we are working on it: estamos a trabalhar / estamos trabalhando.

Some spellings still differ despite the orthographic agreement: facto / fato, receção / recepção. Forms of address differ too: você is natural in Brazil, even on a call-to-action slide, whereas in Portugal it can sound blunt in front of a client, so decks often use impersonal phrasing or the plural instead. If one deck must work in both Lisbon and São Paulo, order both languages rather than a compromise version.

What Portuguese changes on your slides

  • Length: from English, Portuguese runs noticeably longer because it adds articles and prepositions. "Q3 sales results" becomes Resultados de vendas do terceiro trimestre. Punchy three-word titles rarely stay that short.
  • Capitalisation: Portuguese titles use sentence case, not English title case. Months and weekdays are lower case: janeiro, segunda-feira.
  • Numbers: both variants use a decimal comma; thousands are separated by a space in Portugal (1 250,5) and a full stop in Brazil (1.250,5). Ordinals: 1.º in Portugal, 1º in Brazil. Brazilian currency: R$ 1.250,00.
  • Quotation marks: « » are common in Portugal, “ ” in Brazil.
  • Plurals and agreement: Portuguese has the plural categories one, many and other; many covers large rounded numbers built with de: 1 milhão de visitantes, 2 milhões de visitantes. Gender agreement matters too: Bem-vindos or Bem-vindas depending on the audience.
  • Accents: ã, õ, ç, ê, à turn up in almost every title (Visão, Soluções). A decorative heading font chosen for English may not include them.

What Manuce delivers, and what it leaves alone

Manuce translates the text on every slide: titles, placeholders, text boxes, shapes, grouped shapes and tables. You get your original .pptx back: theme, images, shape positions, animations and transitions stay as they were; only the text changes. The same content also comes as a Word file, a PDF and plain text, handy when a Portuguese-speaking colleague reviews without PowerPoint.

Not done at present:

  • speaker notes are not translated;
  • text in charts (an axis labelled "Revenue" stays as is), SmartArt, slide masters (a "Confidential" footer set in the master) and text embedded in images remains in the source language;
  • a paragraph mixing several formats takes the formatting of its start: in "Our new offer", the bold word will not be bold in Portuguese;
  • text box sizes are not recalculated, so a longer title can overflow a fixed box; any autofit set in PowerPoint still applies.

Manuce does not produce sworn or certified translations, which a slide deck rarely needs.

Preparing the file and checking the Portuguese version

Before uploading:

  • move text that needs translating out of the slide master (footers, confidentiality notices) into ordinary text boxes;
  • replace SmartArt with plain shapes where you can, and plan to retype chart labels;
  • leave room in fixed title boxes, especially from an English source, or turn on autofit;
  • check the theme font has ã, õ, ç by typing Visão e Soluções on a test slide.

After delivery, run through the .pptx in slideshow mode and look for:

  • titles that overflow or wrap onto three lines;
  • thousands separators matching the variant you chose;
  • words that were bold or coloured mid-sentence, to restore by hand;
  • speaker notes to translate separately if you are presenting in Portuguese.

In practice

  1. Take translatable text out of the master and SmartArt, and leave room in title boxes.
  2. Upload the .pptx and choose Brazilian or European Portuguese.
  3. Read the free one-paragraph sample and the quote based on the exact word count.
  4. Download the translated .pptx with its Word, PDF and plain text versions.
  5. Review in slideshow mode: overflow, number formats, bold words, speaker notes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to choose between Brazilian and European Portuguese?

Yes, Manuce offers them as two separate languages. Vocabulary (<i>ecrã</i> / <i>tela</i>, <i>equipa</i> / <i>equipe</i>), some spellings and the way you address the audience differ. Pick the one your audience uses, or order both if the deck serves both countries.

Will my speaker notes be translated?

No, not at present. Only the slide text is translated. If you are presenting in Portuguese, paste your notes into a Word document and have it translated separately.

Are charts and SmartArt translated?

No: text in charts, SmartArt, slide masters and images stays in the source language. Convert SmartArt to plain shapes before uploading, and retype chart labels after delivery.

Will the Portuguese text overflow my text boxes?

It can, particularly from English, since Portuguese adds articles and prepositions. Manuce does not resize boxes; any autofit set in PowerPoint still applies. Leave some room and check each title in slideshow mode.

Can I check the quality before paying?

Yes. One paragraph of your file is translated free at the level you choose before any payment, and the quote appears as soon as you upload. For a deck shown to clients, the Professional level aims at text ready to hand over.
