What changes when an audit report goes into English

Audit reports are built on set phrases, and English has its own. A literal rendering from French, German or Spanish rarely produces them. The equivalents an English-speaking reader looks for:

  • The opinion: a clean opinion is an unmodified opinion (often still called unqualified); then come qualified opinion, adverse opinion and disclaimer of opinion. These four labels must not be paraphrased.
  • The auditor: a French commissaire aux comptes is a statutory auditor, not a word-for-word calque.
  • Standard headings: basis for opinion, key audit matters, materiality, going concern.
  • Quality and internal audits: finding, major nonconformity, opportunity for improvement.

Modal verbs carry weight in recommendations. Should signals advice, must or shall signals an obligation. A source phrase such as French « il convient de » belongs on the should side; mixing the two changes how the audit committee reads a corrective action.

Statutory, internal, quality: different vocabularies

“Audit report” covers several kinds of document, and English structures each one differently:

  • Statutory audit of accounts: an independent auditor's report following the headings set by the ISA standards.
  • Internal audit: findings, a risk rating (high, medium, low), a management response and an action owner with a due date.
  • Quality, environmental or safety audit: ISO vocabulary such as audit scope, objective evidence, corrective action.
  • IT audit: control, control deficiency, remediation.

Métis is built for financial and control language. Use the free sample to confirm the register matches your type of audit, for instance that the management's reply is labelled management response rather than a loose paraphrase.

Figures, dates and spelling: British or American

Audit reports are full of amounts, thresholds and deadlines, and number conventions vary between source languages and English:

  • Separators: continental 1.250.000,50 € or 1 250 000,50 € becomes €1,250,000.50; “k€” becomes €k or EUR thousand.
  • Negative amounts: English-language tables usually show them in brackets, (12,400).
  • Dates: 04/03/2025 is 4 March in the UK and 3 April in the US. Writing 4 March 2025 removes the risk, especially for the year-end and the report date.
  • Terms and spelling: financial year (UK) or fiscal year (US); profit and loss account or income statement; organisation, programme in British English, organization, program in American.

Pick the variant to suit the reader: parent company, lender or group auditor. English plurals have only two forms (one, other), so in a summary table write 1 finding and 3 findings rather than finding(s).

What Manuce delivers, and what it does not

Your report goes to Métis, the finance specialist engine. Accepted formats: Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, plain text, Markdown, HTML, RTF and CSV. The file comes back in its original format with its layout: findings tables, rating grids, appendices and headers stay in place. English typically runs 10 to 15 % shorter than French, so cells rarely overflow. A typical report of around 6,000 words is delivered in minutes and stays available in your client area.

For a report going to an audit committee or a third party, the Professional level is designed to be ready to send; Premium adds a cross-review.

Limits worth knowing:

  • Manuce does not produce sworn or certified translations. If a bank, court or authority requires a translation certified by a sworn translator, you will need that service.
  • A scanned PDF (an image with no selectable text) cannot be read, which is often the case for the signed copy.
  • Manuce does not take glossaries or translation memories: check terminology on the free sample, then on the delivered file.

Preparing the file and checking the English version

  • Start from the source file. Upload the Word document, or a PDF exported with selectable text, rather than the signed scan; add signatures afterwards.
  • Keep spreadsheets as they are. If the risk map or action plan lives in Excel, upload the workbook directly: it comes back as Excel.
  • Sample a sensitive paragraph. The opinion paragraph or a critical recommendation makes a good free sample: you see at once whether qualified, should or major nonconformity come out as you expect.
  • Check what should stay unchanged. Company names (“Dupont SAS” stays as is), standard references (ISA, ISO 9001, national auditing standards), finding IDs such as F-03, account names quoted from the ledger.
  • Re-check the numbers. Amounts, materiality, year-end and action due dates: errors here have the heaviest consequences in an audit report.

In practice

  1. Export the report as Word or as a PDF with selectable text.
  2. Upload the file: the quote appears, based on the exact word count.
  3. Choose a level and read the free sample, ideally the opinion paragraph.
  4. Pay, then download the English report in its original format.
  5. Check amounts, dates and proper names before circulating it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a foreign authority accept the translation?

Manuce does not produce sworn or certified translations. If the receiving body requires a translation certified by a sworn translator, you will need that service. For a parent company, audit committee or business partner, a Professional or Premium translation is usually suitable.

My signed report is a scan. Can I upload it?

No, a scanned PDF with no selectable text cannot be read. Upload the original Word file or a PDF exported from your word processor instead, then add signatures to the English version.

Will it be British or American English?

The two differ in spelling (organisation, organization), some terms (financial year, fiscal year) and date order. Choose according to your reader and check the variant on the free sample. Writing dates in full avoids any misreading.

Are findings tables and risk grids preserved?

Yes, the file is returned in its original format, layout included. An Excel workbook comes back as Excel, a Word report as Word with its tables and appendices.

Can I impose my own terminology?

Manuce does not take glossaries or terminology instructions. To check a specific term, such as a heading or a risk level label, look at it in the free sample before paying, then in the delivered translation.
