What changes when an audit report goes into German

German audit language is highly standardised. The report becomes a Prüfungsbericht, the opinion a Prüfungsurteil (within the Bestätigungsvermerk), findings are Feststellungen, recommendations Empfehlungen, and key audit matters besonders wichtige Prüfungssachverhalte. In quality audits, a major nonconformity is a Hauptabweichung, a minor one a Nebenabweichung.

  • Impersonal style: “we noted that” often becomes Es wurde festgestellt, dass…, a passive construction typical of German reports.
  • Every noun is capitalised: die Stichprobe (the sample), die Wesentlichkeit (materiality).
  • Compound nouns: “materiality threshold” becomes Wesentlichkeitsgrenze, “valuation of provisions” Rückstellungsbewertung: one word, with no space to break the line.
  • Formal address: when the report addresses management, Sie and Ihre are capitalised.
  • Plurals: two forms (one, other), as in English: 1 Feststellung, 3 Feststellungen, 0 Feststellungen.

Figures, dates and references: German conventions

An audit report is full of numbers, and a German reader spots badly formatted ones immediately.

  • Separators are swapped: 1,250,000.50 becomes 1.250.000,50 €, with a decimal comma and thousands points.
  • The billion trap: “€2.4 billion” is 2,4 Mrd. €. A German Billion is a trillion. Thousands and millions abbreviate to Tsd. and Mio.
  • Dates: 12/31/2024 or 31/12/2024 becomes 31.12.2024; the financial year is the Geschäftsjahr (often GJ).
  • Percentages: a space before the sign: 12,5 %.
  • References: ISO 19011, IFRS 16, account codes or finding IDs such as F-07 must stay identical.

If the report is for a Swiss audience, usage differs: no ß (written ss) and thousands often separated by an apostrophe. Check these points in the free sample.

Findings tables and appendices: allow for length

German text is often 20 to 35% longer than English, and compounds do not break on their own. Follow-up tables suffer most: “Corrective action” becomes Korrekturmaßnahme, “Due date” Fälligkeitsdatum, “Likelihood” in a risk matrix Eintrittswahrscheinlichkeit. A short column header can double in width.

  • Leave room in narrow columns (owner, due date, rating) or turn on automatic hyphenation in the document.
  • Avoid fixed-height text boxes in the summary deck presented to the audit committee.
  • Pagination will shift: update the table of contents and cross-references such as “see Appendix 3, p. 14”.

What Manuce delivers, and what it does not

Your report is translated by Métis, the finance specialist engine. The file comes back in its original format, layout included: Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, plain text, Markdown, HTML, RTF or CSV. A typical report of around 6,000 words (about 20 pages) is delivered within minutes and stays available in your client area. For a report going to a German parent company or auditor, the Professional level is designed for that use.

What Manuce does not do:

  • No sworn or certified translation. If a German court, register or authority requires a beglaubigte Übersetzung, use a sworn translator.
  • No scanned PDFs: an image without selectable text is not read.
  • No client glossary: for an entity, system or KPI name that must stay as it is, check the free sample and then the delivered translation.

Preparing the file and checking the result

Before uploading:

  • Make sure the text is selectable; if not, start from the source file (Word, Excel) rather than a printed and scanned PDF.
  • Accept or remove remaining tracked changes and comments so that only the final version is uploaded.
  • Prefer charts whose labels are editable text rather than pasted images.

After delivery, check first:

  • the opinion paragraph and any qualification (Einschränkung), to be signed off by the auditor;
  • totals, separators and the Mio. and Mrd. abbreviations;
  • finding numbers and their match with the action plan (Maßnahmenplan);
  • column widths and the table of contents.

In practice

  1. Check that the report text is selectable and tracked changes are accepted.
  2. Upload the file: the quote appears at once, based on the exact word count.
  3. Read the free translated paragraph: terminology, figures, tone.
  4. Pay, then download the German report in its original format.
  5. Review the opinion, figures and tables, and update the contents page.

Frequently asked questions

Can Manuce provide a sworn translation of my audit report?

No. Manuce does not produce translations certified by a sworn translator. If a German authority or court requires a beglaubigte Übersetzung, you will need a sworn translator.

My report is a scanned PDF. Will it work?

No, a scanned PDF (an image without selectable text) is not read. Upload the Word file or a PDF exported directly from the authoring software instead.

Will the findings tables keep their layout?

Yes, the file comes back in its original format with the layout included. Because German is longer and full of compound nouns, do check narrow columns and headers.

Should I check the figures after translation?

Yes, it is the most valuable check. German uses a decimal comma, thousands points and abbreviations such as Mio. and Mrd.; make sure “billion” has not become Billion. Also confirm that standards, account codes and finding IDs are unchanged.

Can I translate the same report into German and another language?

Yes, and a discount applies to the whole order from two languages: −20% for two, −30% for three. German is charged at the base rate.
