Audit terminology in Italian

An audit report turns on a handful of terms that carry weight: the type of opinion, the findings and the recommendations. Italian has settled equivalents, many of them fixed by the ISA Italia standards, and they should appear in the translation.

 • Unmodified opinion: giudizio senza rilievi. Qualified: giudizio con rilievi. Adverse: giudizio negativo. Disclaimer of opinion: dichiarazione di impossibilità di esprimere un giudizio.
 • Key audit matters: aspetti chiave della revisione contabile.
 • Statutory auditor: revisore legale (individual) or società di revisione (firm).
 • Material misstatement: errore significativo. Going concern: continuità aziendale.
 • Finding: rilievo. Major nonconformity (ISO audits): non conformità maggiore. Action plan: piano d'azione.

Two traps are common. The Italian collegio sindacale is a body specific to Italian company law: an audit committee or supervisory board in your source should not be renamed as one. And in Italian internal audit, several English terms are in everyday use (internal audit, follow-up, management letter), so finding them left in English is not a mistake.

Numbers, dates and register: what changes in Italian

Italian runs slightly longer than English. Findings tables usually hold their shape, but narrow columns and headings can wrap. The bigger differences lie elsewhere.

 • Separators: Italian uses a full stop for thousands and a comma for decimals, so €1,250,000.00 becomes 1.250.000,00 €. Percentages are written 12,5%.
 • Dates: 31/12/2024 or 31 dicembre 2024, with the month in lower case. Headings use far fewer capitals than English title case.
 • Accents: è, più, perché, and the capital È, which should not be typed as E'.
 • Plurals: Italian has three plural categories (one, many, other). You write 1 rilievo and 3 rilievi, but 1 milione di euro, with di. Some nouns do not change: una criticità, due criticità.
 • Register: the impersonal form dominates (si raccomanda alla Direzione di…, è stato rilevato che…). Where the report addresses management directly, it uses the formal Lei.

What Manuce delivers, and what it does not

Your report is translated by Métis, Manuce's finance-specialised engine. The file comes back in its original format (Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, plain text, Markdown, HTML, RTF, CSV) with the layout intact: findings tables, numbered recommendations and appendices. A typical report of around 6,000 words, roughly 20 pages, is delivered within minutes and kept in your client area. Before paying, you get a free sample: one paragraph of your own file translated at the level you choose. For a report going to an Italian subsidiary, partner or auditor, the Professional level is the one designed for text ready to send.

The limits are clear:

 • A scanned PDF (an image with no selectable text) cannot be read.
 • Manuce does not produce sworn translations. If an Italian court, chamber of commerce or authority requires a traduzione giurata or asseverata, you will need an accredited translator.
 • Manuce takes no glossary or terminology instructions and does not review substance: the opinion remains that of the signing auditor.

Preparing the file and checking the translation

Before uploading:

 • Make sure the PDF text is selectable; if not, upload the source Word file instead.
 • Keep figures in their original Excel workbook rather than as screenshots pasted into the report: images are not translated.
 • Pick a demanding paragraph for the sample, such as the opinion or a basis for qualification.

After delivery, check these first:

 1. The type of opinion: a giudizio con rilievi must not turn into senza rilievi, or the other way round.
 2. Amounts: compare a few totals line by line and check separators, especially in Excel cells stored as text.
 3. Proper names: entity names, legal forms (S.p.A., S.r.l., or Ltd staying Ltd), signatories.
 4. Standards referenced: a report prepared under ISAs, PCAOB or a national framework must keep citing it, not swap it for ISA Italia.
 5. Dates of the reporting period and signature.

In practice

 1. Export the report as Word, Excel or a PDF with selectable text.
 2. Upload it and choose Italian: the quote reflects the exact word count.
 3. Read the free sample, ideally on the opinion paragraph.
 4. Pay, then download the Italian report from your client area.
 5. Check the opinion, amounts, names and standards referenced.

Frequently asked questions

What is a qualified opinion in Italian?

Giudizio con rilievi. An unmodified opinion is giudizio senza rilievi and an adverse one giudizio negativo. It is the first thing to check in the delivered translation.

Can I file the translation with an Italian authority?

Manuce does not produce sworn translations. If the recipient requires a traduzione giurata or asseverata, you need an accredited translator. For working use, such as a subsidiary, partners or an Italian auditor, Manuce's translation is suitable.

Will my findings tables overflow?

Italian runs a little longer than English, so check narrow columns and headings. The file comes back in its original format with the layout kept, which means most tables hold their shape.

My report is a scanned PDF. Will it work?

No, a scanned PDF without selectable text cannot be read. Upload the original Word file or a PDF exported directly from your software.

Can I make sure certain terms stay unchanged?

Manuce does not take glossaries. For a term you want kept as it is, such as an internal procedure name, check it in the free sample and then in the delivered translation.
